James (Jimmy) Azzarello is a Partner in the firm's Chicago office, focusing his practice the nationwide defense of claims arising under The Longshore Act and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, the Defense Base Act (DBA) and the Jones Act, also having expertise in the litigation of General Maritime claims. His background also includes marine cargo and collision claims, limitation of liability claims, and oil pollution claims. Jimmy has extensive experience representing individual mariners in license defense actions before the U.S. Coast Guard.
Prior to joining the firm, Jimmy interned and clerked for the Honorable Lee J. Romero, Jr. of the United States Department of Labor, Office of Administrative Law Judges, where he assisted drafting Decisions and Orders related to The Longshore Act, DBA, Non-Appropriated Funds Instrumentation Act, Sarbanes-Oxley, and the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. Additionally, conducted numerous domestic and international shipboard investigations and has presented Longshore and DBA topics at national seminars.
Jimmy obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1997. He earned his law degree from Tulane University School of Law with a Certificate in Maritime Law. He is active member of the DOL Joint Bar Association and has served as a Port Director for the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute. Jimmy is licensed to practice law in Illinois, Louisiana, and Texas.
