Fort Lauderdale, Fla.– Kelley, Kronenberg, Gilmartin, Fichtel, Wander, Bamdas, Eskalyo and Dunbrack, P.A. attorney Melissa O’Connor, who heads the firm’s Environmental Law section, was recently an invited speaker at the South Florida Association of General Contractor’s Safety Committee on October 12, 2011, at Balfour Beatty Construction in Plantation. O’Connor presented “Environmental Compliance Overview for a General Contractor: the basics of being in compliance, maintaining compliance, and defending against violations.”
The Florida AGC Safety Committee Meeting is one of the largest of its kind in South Florida for professionals to discuss best safety practices as they relate to the construction industry.
O’Connor concentrates her practice on environmental law, including counseling and advising clients on strategies to assure environmental compliance and avoid or minimize environmental risks and liabilities. Additionally, she handles the defense of environmental enforcement actions. Her clients consist of companies and individuals in matters involving federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. She also assists in Workers’ Compensation matters involving mold and exposure issues.
O’Connor is an experienced regulator who has worked as an independent environmental consultant. Her unique background provides her with in-depth knowledge of the issues facing the regulated community, particularly solid and hazardous wastes, leaking underground storage tanks, drinking water, wastewater and water quality standards as they relate to permitting.
She received a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science Affairs from the University of Miami, and earned a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from The Johns Hopkins University, before earning her law degree. She has published two law review articles on water quality standards and environmental justice, and frequently speaks on topics within her legal specialty.
