A competent adult may designate authority to a Health Care Surrogate to make any and all health care decisions during a period of incapacity. If a child is traveling with a 3rd party, like a grandparent or friend, a parent may too seek to name a health care surrogate for the minor. The Health Care Surrogate is meant to act in accordance with how he/she believes the incapacitated person would have acted under the circumstances. Further, the Surrogate must act in the best interest of the maker if a type of decision is not specified. The maker can designate an Alternate Surrogate, who would assume duties of the Surrogate if the original Surrogate is unwilling or unable to perform his/her duties.
